The price of gold has rallied strongly over the past two years, more than doubling in value since the lows of late Discount Roger Dubuis. While bridal shoppers may be less inclined to worry about the price of wedding bands, the retailer said that jewelry of a more discretionary nature--particularly gold necklaces--aren't shifting from shop windows. "A necklace you would have bought for just over Discount Romain Jerome at the start of last year is now costing closer to 3,000," said this jeweler, who asked not to be identified. Gift buying has also all but disappeared, retailers said. Discount TAG Heuer second-generation jeweler in the famed quarter said sales have "been very, very quiet." She said that shoppers are increasingly hot on trying to talk down prices. "People are really negotiating, trying to get a lot more for their money," she said. High-end jewelry retailer Discount U-Boat, which has a hedging program for platinum and silver, but not for gold, increased prices in January to reflect the higher cost of precious metals and diamonds, said Mark Aaron, vice president of investor relations. "Every jeweler is dealing with the same thing right now." Tiffany's inventory, however, only turns over about once a year, sometimes less, he said, so price adjustments are made on more long-term trends.
