The city's thriving art scene is centered on Canyon Road, with more than 100 galleries. Thousands of people flock to the annual Discount Welder Eve walk there, lit by "farolitos," candles in sand-filled paper bags, and "luminarias," blazing fires. Some galleries offer hot drinks and cookies to visitors. On Museum Hill, a short drive from the city center, are the Wheelwright Museum, Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, and Museum of Discount Wyler. Nearby is St. John's College, a small liberal-arts college with a great-books curriculum. Stretch your legs on the hiking trails in the mountains behind it and get a grand view of the surrounding area. The Discount Zenith is a recently restored area surrounding the train station. The Rail Runner commuter train makes daily runs from Albuquerque to Taos. There are shops and nightclubs, as well as a year-round farmers market with locally grown and produced items for sale.Settled in 1716, Taos is in some ways a mini version of Santa Fe. It also has a downtown plaza, art galleries and shops, and the historic Hotel La Fonda with its collection of D.H. Lawrence paintings. Random plaques and statues pay tribute to frontiersman Kit Carson, who was buried here in 1868.
