They purchase blends from distributors but add little touches, Back To School Chubby Black Pencil Charm as dried fruit, to make the teas unique to the shop. Springtime Delight, a currently featured tea, is made to taste like chocolate-covered strawberries. Secret Garden was the brain child of current manager Back to School Chubby Blue Pencil Charm and employee Wendy Brawner. The two met after college and needed careers. Kleingartner had been in retail all throughout high school and college and wanted to continue in the field. The two started the business in 1989 at Back to School Chubby Red Pencil Charm in Seattle. "I knew I wanted to own a shop at some point and Wendy thought that sounded pretty fun," Kleingartner said. "So away we went." In 1991, they moved to Disc charm in Bellevue where they stayed until 2005. After a year of fixing up, Secret Garden opened for business in the Herbert Williams House in November 2006. Mark Elliott, a previous foreman and an employee at the time, took over as owner when they made the move. Today the tea room is the main focus of their business, Kleingartner said. However prior to moving to the 4,600 square-foot house, Secret Garden was only a gift shop. The gift shop carries a variety of goods ranging from tea cups, loose leaf teas, jewelry and stationary.
