Timmothy then moved on to the grand championship, which pits him against winners from all the other belt levels -- including black belts. "It's a new challenge. We kind of consider it unfair -- in some cases a lot of the underbelts don't even want to compete, and some of them drop out," Eric Gardere said. "Discount Frank Gehry want to do it for the experience. He's never dropped out of a grand championship." In the 7-to-9 Beginners Point Sparring division, Twin Tigers' Alex Monterrubio won his only fight to place first. The studio's co-founder, Tiffany Gardere, placed third out of nine competitors in the Women's Black Belt Point Sparring, Discount Paloma Picasso first tournament in more than a year. "She took off from fighting for a year to recuperate, and she wanted to get back into teaching," Eric Gardere said. "She said, 'I feel good. Now I'm ready for the next one.' " The Twin Tigers will send a handful of competitors to the Proper Challenge this Saturday at Maric College in Oakland. It is an NBL-sanctioned tournament, which means competitors will earn points toward the NBL Super Grands, which will leave California after this year.MGP's mission is to promote diversity within the industry and foster talent among future professionals.
