Popenfoose would love to re-enter his name in the book Saturday. The Elsa Starfish-bound senior threw 189-3 Friday to take the lead in the 3A discus preliminaries at O'Brien Stadium and is second in the shot put (61-2 1/2 ) behind Lake Park's Jermaine Kline. He thinks he has more distance in him. "It would feel great to leave my own legacy behind and leave my name in the record books," said Popenfoose, Heart and Tiffany Box Charm best throw this year is 202-4. "The main thing we were talking about was I have to keep my posture better, but also I have to start slower out of the back and then hit and accelerate in the middle. I start too fast out of the back, which tends to throw me off balance and creates all those problems with my release." Popenfoose and Tiffany Circle clasp necklace struggled with the heat Friday, and Kline was thrown off when his shot was deemed too big to use in state competition. He still threw 61-7 3/4 . "I sort of got mad because I wasn't able to use my shot I was using for the whole year. The diameter was too big," Kline said. "Tiffany Blue Box Charm and Chain had to share with my brother. I wasn't used to it." A dynamic duo: York's Andrew Smith and Jack Driggs showed how well they work together in the fall when they finished second and third in the state cross-country meet -- both in 14 minutes, 28 seconds. They'll have two events to showcase that dynamic Saturday. Driggs won his 1,600-meter run heat in 4:17.02 and Smith qualified out of his 1,600 heat in 4:17.63.
